How do I house train my dog?

I have a dog and my family is fed up with all the crap around the house. I want to train him but I don’t know how, he is still young, but not a puppy. I spoiled him rotten, so now he thinks he can do what ever. I,ve heard of that technique taking him out every 2-3 hours but, I don’t see him between 6:00am – 3:30pm because of school. How should I train him & what is a good schedule. Help please.

Do NOT push your dogs nose in the mess, do NOT spray the dog with water – this simply makes the dog scared of water and will in turn maker them scared of humans. nor shout at him unless you actually catch him in the act. The dog does not understand these approaches at all.
Consistency is he key.
Dogs can get confused in large spaces about where they do their business – as others have said reducing their space makes it easier to get their head around where they need to do their business.
Stay with the dog as much as possible – whey they do the right reward them enthusiastically and give them a treat. When you clean up the newspaper make sure you leave at least one sheet with pee or a little poop on it so they can find the scent and register that this is where they do their business.
If you actually catch them in the act of doing it in the wrong spot immediately say NO (or whatever your control word is) in a strong assertive voice several times and then ignore them for a period of time.
Doing this consistently will eventually get your dog trained – it can be frustrating BUT yields great results.

First, get a spray bottle with water, every time your dog does something wrong spray him in the face or flick his nose. This will probably go on for about a year. Also, when he does crap in a room, take him by the collar and push his face by it, flick his nose (not violently) and yell in a angry tone "No". Dogs react to tone of your voice, when you have a particularly optimistic voice, your dog will react by happiness. When you have an angry voice, he will become intimidated. So, by saying "No" and pushing his face by the crap, he will become scared to do that anymore because he doesn’t want to get screamed at. Puppy’s need to go out every 2-3hours but I have been told that they can only hold it for there age, say he’s 5months that’s 5hours, 6months 6hours, any age over 1year 8-10hours. If you can not be with him during those hours ask someone to take him out. If not crate train him while hes still young..Good Luck
You won’t be able to train him while keeping those hours.
You can crate train him, depending on what size he is. Or blocking him off in a small area with a bed, so that he knows that’s his ‘den’ and he will not want to eliminate.
Do not let him roam around the house unattended until he is able to control his elimination times.
When you are at home on the weekends, make sure that you are teaching him a routine. Take him outside as often as you can, and make sure you are consistent.
This is no longer the dogs fault that he’s not house broken if you can’t follow these simple steps.
That is a long time to be home without anyone to let him out. You can try crate training but someone has to let him out around 11 at the latest. You can also block off the kitchen or the bathroom (you can wipe up the mess easier in a small area than have to go looking for "treats" your dog left behind throughout the house).
