Dog training advice: walking on a leash?

My 4 year old dog was abused as a puppy and has tons of anxiety problems. One including, walking on a lead. She’ll do it fine in the house, but as soon as we try to walk her passed the driveway she shuts down. She’ll flatten out and roll on her back and do anything to get out of her leash. She’ll walk fine if we take her in the car and go somewhere else. She comes to the petstore and trots around like a pro and she’ll walk around the trails at the dog park, only because they’re away from home.

So we’ve hired three dog trainers to help us, and each one said to drag out dog along until she submits and walks. This worked fine for a little bit, except she was beginning to dread walking and training at all. She was really frightened and I didn’t like having to drag her along every time she had an anxiety attack.

So what I have been doing for the passed few days, is having someone drop me off at the park with my dog, then we walk home together. She walks fine as long as she’s not leaving home, so it’s been working pretty well. I’ve been having her sit at every corner so I can give her treats and lots of cuddles, hoping to put walking in her mind as something fun.

I was wondering what any fellow dog trainers think of this technique. I’m hoping to start being dropped off closer and closer to home, until the point where we can just leave the house and have a normal walk.

Thanks for any advice!! :)
@Greek God AKA Greekman…my dog WAS abused. This is a fact, she and her litter were taken away from someone charged WITH ANIMAL ABUSE against my dog. So please don’t tell me otherwise.
I don’t KNOW. The shelter she was from told me all I know, that she and her litter were abused and the city pound took them in, and she was going to be euthanized because their time was up so the rescue I adopted her from took the litter in to save them, like many rescues do. I was concerned because I didn’t want to have a chance that my dog might be agressive once she grows up, she’s my first dog and I didn’t want to adopt someone who needs an experienced handler. so I asked the rescue if they knew what she endured. The woman helping me said she wasn’t sure, something about the dogs tied up in someones yard through the winter. Like I said the rescue didn’t directly take the dogs, the city pound did.

Please stop telling me all you seem to know about /my/ dog.

Dog Training Advice?

I have had quite a few dogs in the past, and have been able to train them pretty quickly and easily, but my new puppy doesn’t seem to want to learn. She’s very smart, and can already sit, lay down, and fetch, but she doesn’t want to stop chewing, biting, or going on the floor. What is the best way to stop her from doing these things?
If you have any advice, please help. Or if you know of any good websites, that would help also. =]

Dog training advice please?

Hi all.

I have always trained my own dogs. I have a pup that I just adopted and she is about 4 months old. She was potty trained in 4 days, she will sit, laydown, and heel right beside me.

However as she will heel…if she is around a whole bunch of chaos she will just dart off. I love her to death but she is so hard headed….more hard headed than any other dog I have trained before.

So I guess I just want some advice as to how I can get her to heel, or come and actually stay put around a lot of distractions, without having to get after her a thousand times. Any advice would be awesome!

Thankyou in advance for reading :o )
Ok I see I have some comments. I want to make one thing clear. I do use a lead to train my dog.

I just want her to be able to do this without a lead as well.

My first dog trains on lead great….and does the same without a lead as well.

I just want to be able to train to that point that I do not need a lead.

The main reason I do this is in case my dog is off a lead and if there is an emergency….say my dog runs into the street or something and a car is coming…I want her to be able to respond to my command without having to yell, yell, yell and have my dog running mad.

I train beyond just lead training.
Just to note. I know my dog is pup and she is full of energy like any other pup. I do not expect her to do this over nigh I would just like to have some tips on how to work with distractions starting as a pup because it is the best time to start.

I know this takes a while and keep planing on working with her in the future months…years. I expect this. Just wanted some tips on where to start with distractions.

Can I get some help/advice with dog training?

I taught my puppy to sit.
I taught my puppy to sit and shake

I just taught her how to "speak" on command but now since we have been working on that so much…. she immidiatly thinks I want her to "speak" when I am asking her to sit! Poor thing is confused. Any advice?

How do I teach her to lay down? She does start training 1 week from today. I hired a dog trainer to come into our home. I just want her to know some things now.

Ok so I’ve been wanting to get a new dog for a while now. I actually have a dog now, he is a beagle. I want to get a toy pomeranian, they are very cute and playful. My beagle doesn’t like other animals, and will bark at them and try to bite them. I don’t want to get a new dog if my beagle is just going to attack it! Its strange because he is very nice and playful when with the family and other people. Any training tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

My recently rescued 3 year old dog (Olde English Bulldog) is very strong: when he pulls on his leash he can almost take you off your feet. Most of the time he’s fine, but occasionally (when we run into cats, squirrals etc) he pulls really hard on the lead, it can be dangerous sometimes.

Does anyone have any tips on how to humanely train him to not pull so much?

Dog training?

So, I’m going to start training my siberian husky for urban mushing. (He is around three years.) I’ve already started with the "On By" command during daily walks. Are there any mushers out there that could give me a few tips about training for urban mushing? Mostly with the directional comands, but tips on all of it would be great! :]

Thanks!
