Try giving him in own "special" sock.. Make it stand out more then the other socks you normally wear. Everytime you catch him with a sock that he shouldn’t have give him his special sock. This will work best if you give him one that he already tries to steal. He may be attracted to its smell.
Remember no matter what type of training you decide to use..all training takes time, patiences and consistency.
hehe. My american bulldog did this when we first got her. She eventually just stopped. She would also try and take them off our feet. I’m sure it’s something he’ll just stop on his own.
Is it really a problem? Are there any other behaviors you don’t like? We give my puppy old socks to play with and she tends to leave the ones in the laundry basket alone.
i don’t understand what the problem is…pick up your socks…
Put your socks away? If nothing else, my dog has taught me to be a neat freak because any article of clothing not in the dresser or in the hamper ends up in the living room. Especially if there are guests. The best way to eliminate these problems are to put your socks away, and in the event that he does find one (mine prefer folded pairs of socks), take it and say "No, this is mine" (hand him a toy) and say, "this is your toy!"
What type of dog is he. Retrievers, working dogs, they need a purpose. Maybe he’s just doing what comes naturally.
Our dog does pretty much the same thing as our last dog, i think they carry your socks around for a sense of security. I know that some dogs love to have one special wore sock from their owner as it reminds them who there mommy and or there daddy is. Thats just my opinion. hope this makes a little since for ya.
sometimes a dog just likes to have fun n maby thats the way he likes to play.
LOL. That’s kinda cute & funny.
I’m not sure exactly how to correct this. I wonder if she just needs more mental & physical stimulation.
I think your right. Sometime animals if nervous are known for obsessive compulsive, habitual habits. Its a habit that he’s formed.
It’s probably just a phase. One of my puppies would do the same thing..only with long sleeved shirts! Just keep doing what you are doing. He’ll probably stop sooner or later.
You could always tie a couple old socks together into a toy, and redircect him from the "wrong socks" to his new and exciting "sock toy!!"
Let him have his socks. They smell like your brother. If they come back in one piece, is it an issue?
My roommate had a dog that would steal my underwear. She (the dog) slept with it. Made her feel safe.
My friend’s GS would make little beds or pillows when either of us were gone for vacation or something of that sort.
If it’s an issue, maybe do a substitution, where he has a pair of socks he is allowed to have. And everytime he takes a pair, give him his pair. And make sure it keeps smelling like your brother
LOL! OMG! Dog anxiety??!! No, he simply is probably bored as hell and wants you to play with him. Simple, pick up your socks if you don’t want him to take them. He’s bringing them to you because he wants you to throw them so he can fetch them again for you. He probably just wants to play and is finding something ‘that smells like his owners’ to play with. This is the reason you never want to give a dog an old shoe or an old sock…. once you give him one, all socks and shoes are fair game. Just make sure he has some toys to play with and start spending more time fetching with him. You’ll be surprised at what 15mins of exercise will do, …he’ll be worn out for a bit after that. The verbal discipline won’t work, the dog doesn’t understand what he’s doing wrong. Just pick up all your socks.
