I brush my cairn terrier nearly every day, but no mattter what I do he still has that scraggly look, I keep him inside so hes not really exposed to any elements that will make his fur matted or anything. Can anyone advise and shampoos or grooming methods to stop him looking so wild?

I have a Yorkie and have the same problem. How old is your dog? I ran into a lady a couple weeks ago that had Yorkie’s and we started talking about her (my dog’s) crazy hair. She told me that as ‘teens’ they go through a ‘wild’ stage with their hair, but once they get their adult coat, it will be ‘beautiful’. That’s what she told me and she said she had 3 Yorke’s at home, I hope she’s right because my dog is 6 months old and looks unbrushed about 2 minutes after I spend an hour brushing her!
That was a joke, right? I mean, people get cairn terriers for that wild look. I have never seen a smoothly groomed cairn terrier and I’m glad cos I love that cairn terrier look. If you like smooth, you need a different breed.
You need to take him to a professional groomer who can "strip" his coat. You should do this more often in the summer months. Also try bathing him in a conditioning dog shampoo.
Keep in mind this type of breed will always have a "scruffy" look, but with professional stripping his coat will be more managable!
take him to a groomer once then if you like the way the groom then try doing it the way the do it… or take him to the groomers every month or so
cairn terriers are supposed to have that rough look if you didnt like it you should of picked a diffrent breed of dog i love the way there coat is!
I give my male cairn fish oil supplement a day and it seems to work well. Alot of people tell me how soft his hair is I think its the fish oil. It even gives it a soft glossy shiny look.
