is it a good idea for me to spray those dog sprays on his leash and my clothing to get him to stop chewing and biting on them?

You can try using lemon juice, lime juice, or even hot sauce, because those are commonly found around the house and cheap. Some dogs (like mine) really like those, though. It’s also effective in some cases to get a chain leash, because dogs are very unlikely to bite those.
Yes, they work great. Bitter Yuck, Bitter Apple or my fave - Tropiclean. You don’t need to use a lot or it and be careful not to get it on your hands.
Bitter sprays will work, but be aware that if you use them you will also likely end up tasting them. When you spray them, do not inhale in that area because they have an awful taste. Also if you touch the leash or your clothes where the spray was, be sure to wash your hands or you will be tasting it again.
Another option is to have toys handy so if your dog goes to chew your clothes, you can offer a toy to play with instead (something squeaky is much more fun than clothes as long as you are willing to interact with your dog and the toy). On a walk you may want to bring some smelly treats, and work on healing, so reward your dog for walking beside you and looking at you. If your dog grabs the leash, stop walking, put the smelly treat in front of your dog’s nose, tell them to drop the leash ("drop it" or "give") and when they let go of the leash they get the treat. The smell of the treat is a good incentive to drop the leash.
Good luck!
