My dog ate an entire thin piece of rawhide in under 5 minutes?

My 22 lb dog just ingested a piece of rawhide (thin, looks like a short straw) very quickly. She is new from the shelter and evidently an aggressive eater, and it looked like the rawhide was chewed to a pasty mush, but we’re not sure. She did not want to release the rawhide once we grew concerned.
Will this harm her?

My little pug (20lbs), eats the hugest pieces of raw hide, mush larger than you are describing. He is always fine and of course we watch him and try to stop him from doing this. But he occasionally swollows a large piece. I have never noticed any problems from this…
Shelter dogs are often aggressive eaters because they have had to fight for food in the past. As well, they may have been deprived of food in the past. My other pug is like this, she eats like crazy when we feed her. She has gotten better on her own as she realises the food will always be there. Also, getting a special ’slow eating’ bowl will help.
We have learned what treats are safe for her and with ones arent. Dont ever give her a tooth brushing treat, or anything hard and big like that. Dried pigs ears have been good for her, because they are large and flat and she needs to chew it to eat it, she cant swallow it whole.
But yeah, dont worry, it will be fine.
no, my sheepdog eats a pig ear in 3 secconds =]
it is going to be fine.
It won’t hurt her, unless she chokes on it. If it bothers you, just don’t give her any more of them. You may also want to look into a special bowl, if she wolfs down her kibble as well, that is made to slow down a dog’s eating. They basically look like bowls with some vertical cylindrical shapes coming up from the bottom, and they make the dog eat around these, and thereby slow down its eating. Good luck!
LOL Dogs have a tendancy to do that. Just watch her for signs of problems when she poops
It shouldn’t harm her. Watch for constipation although my dog got the runs on rawhide and I gave it up.
Just keep an eye on her. If she appears to be getting sick or isn’t her self, then you can become concerned. For now though, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
One thing to keep in mind about rawhide is that it is water-absorbant. This means that when the dog ingests it, it will absorb any liquid substance in the dog’s stomach and it will expand. The danger with this is that if a big enough piece is eaten too quickly, then it can expand in the stomach and cause intestinal blockage-thus requiring immediate surgery.
A small, straw-like piece won’t be big enough to do much damage.
For the future, my recommendation is to get compressed rawhide bones and treats, such as this;

They are safer than regular rawhide.
Or, go for alternative treat/chew options-edible nylabones, busy bones, etc etc. There are hundreds of choices.
I think she’ll be fine. I have a 1 year old chesapeake bay retriever who will devour anything given to him in a matter of minutes-my parents love giving the dogs rawhide, and so I have seen him go through it like a madman, with no problems afterwards. Just keep an eye on her if she appears to be sick, but I really don’t think you’re going to have a problem.
Yes, it can harm her. Never give a dog rawhide, it swells up in their stomach and can cause a blockage. One of the worse things you can give to a dog. Give your dog knuckle bones or nylabones.
